Avery Brennen has experience across multiple civil engineering disciplines, including transportation design, land development, and most recently, forensic engineering. He is a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and is now a certified Engineer-in-Training (EIT). Mr. Brennen has evaluated hail damage, differential settlement, and foundation issues across a range of structures. He is eager to continue expanding his expertise in forensic engineering in the years ahead.
What is your most interesting project or accomplishment?
Foundation Shift in Highrise
While working on a high-rise in downtown Austin, I encountered my first experience with differential settlement, caused by the local geology and the building’s proximity to a river. It was also my first time working on a high-rise structure, which gave me a unique perspective on both the technical challenges and a side of Austin I hadn’t seen before. This project taught me that beyond gaining technical knowledge, there’s also value in connecting with people and understanding their experiences as you work to support and help them.
What do you love about your job?
No two days are the same. One week, I might be out in the Texas heat inspecting schools, and the next, in California assessing fire damage. The variety keeps things interesting, and the balance between office and field work helps prevent burnout in either setting.
Why did you follow your career path?
While I was in school, I worked at a few design firms and enjoyed the experience, but I always found myself more excited about going on site. I realized I wanted a career that offered a good balance between office work and fieldwork. That opportunity came when I met Dr. Ryan Kalina through a UT intramural softball team. He introduced me to forensic engineering, and it immediately resonated with me. I saw it as the perfect fit for my interests and goals, so I took the opportunity and never looked back.
What are your interests outside of work?
During my time outside of work I like to stay active, play board games, or spend time with my friends. I’m currently working on getting better at pickleball and volleyball, and I’m always looking for ways to improve.
Who or what motivates you?
My motivation comes from pursuing things I’m genuinely interested in. I’m also highly competitive, which drives me to continually improve and push myself to be the best at whatever I take on. If success means putting in the work to grow, I’m all in.
Who or what do you love to work with?
I’m at my best when I’m around competitive people; they push me to reach my full potential. I enjoy working with teams that know how to have fun, but also challenge me and hold me accountable, rather than offering easy outs.
